Jorndt Field

This was a renovation project of the existing Winnemac Park Stadium with funding from the Chicago Public Schools and a million dollar donation from the Jorndt family. Located in the North Center neighborhood, this stadium is on the same campus park as Amundsen High School, but is also shared by other high schools in the area that do not have stadium facilities.

It was essential to address the aesthetic as well as the practical concerns in order to make this a successful renovation. Significant upgrades and enhancements were done to the following: rebuilding the press box so as to create an identifiable street marker; renovating the stands; creating a new ornamental balustrade; improving exterior lighting; and adding a cast-iron ticket booth and concession stand.  In addition, new fencing was installed, a limestone framed scoreboard was added, and the entry area around the stadium was landscaped. All these improvements make Jorndt Field a neighborhood landmark.

The field was renamed in honor of Louis C. Jorndt who was a coach at Amundsen High School and later became Director of Physical Education for the Chicago Public Schools.

This project was dedicated in the fall of 2004.

Construction Cost: $1.6 million
