Howland Elementary School / North Lawndale College Prep

This project was a two-phase Chicago Public School major capital renovation. The existing building had elements that required rebuilding or removal. The building housed a small charter high school and elementary school. SWWB Ltd. was charged to renovate the facilities and improve the quality of the space for both schools. One of the design challenges was to make the building function as a school for both grammar and high school students. The differences between the needs (physical, psychological, and operational) of each school, required a reallocation of the existing spaces. this consolidation of schools eliminated circulation and class scheduling conflicts.

Phase 1 included the following: exterior masonry cleaning and pointing; new window and door installation; improved exterior lighting; new roofing; new toilet rooms; new electrical power service upgrade; and the renovation of the abandoned auditorium.

Phase 2 included the creation of new high school areas in a west wing that was originally designated for demolition. These spaces included: new science classrooms, administration offices, toilets and locker room facilities.

Completed in the fall of 2002.

Construction Cost: $8.1 Million
