Chavez Second Chance

This was an interior renovation project of an existing parochial elementary school in order to make it adaptable as an alternative high school by the Chicago Public Schools. Preliminary designs were created to show new high school classrooms, a lunchroom, library and office space. A child care facility was provided on site for students’ children. Due to the diverse ages using this facility, a large range of needs had to be met. The school is designed to accommodate year-round learning.

The goal was to give the school a lighter, brighter and more appealing environment through the use of new light fixtures and surface finishes. New flooring was added to make it easier to maintain. Wood surfaces that had been damaged were restored and the hardware on doors and cabinets was replaced. The toilet rooms were modified for adult use. Simple and durable materials were used to match the design of the original building.

Opened in the fall of 2004.

Construction cost: $1 million.
